Ten years of video, and a newsroom asking every week: “didn’t we already cover this?”
01.The challenge
Searching the way you speak

The archive was well ordered - by date, by format, by country. Nobody searches like that. You search for a subject, an angle, a sentence heard once, and you no longer know when.
We put natural-language search on top of the existing archive, then designed the answers the way a newsroom reads them: a clip, its date, its length, and enough to know within two seconds whether it is the right story.

02.The product approach
Designing the answer before designing the question.

03.The method
Our approach: make the machine legible rather than impressive.
001.
A search that has to be wrong cleanly
An approximate answer announced as certain costs more than an empty result.
002.
A heterogeneous archive
Ten years of formats, languages and successive naming conventions.
003.
A newsroom with no time
Searching happens between two edits: it has to answer before you give up.

A first screen put in the hands of six journalists from the second week, then reworked after every observation session. Search has become the starting point of the editorial meeting.
