The back-office of a banking network, made readable

Three team members talking, laptops on their knees

01.The brief

Forty thousand advisers, one screen, and two hundred and twelve fields shown at once.

02.The challenge

Prioritise without removing anything

The tool worked. Nobody found it readable. We spent three weeks behind the advisers in the branch before proposing anything, then rebuilt the hierarchy of the screen rather than its decoration.

We rebuilt the hierarchy of the screen rather than its decoration: a type scale, explicit loading states, and documented components that five teams took over.

03.The product approach

Rebuild the hierarchy of the screen, not its decoration.

Sitting in the branch

Three weeks watching over advisers’ shoulders, timing the gestures they repeat a hundred times a day.

Prioritise rather than remove

A type scale and explicit loading states, so the eye finds what matters first without losing the rest.

Our approach: start from the gestures repeated a hundred times a day.

  • 001.

A density that cannot be reduced

An adviser needs to see everything. We had to prioritise without taking anything off the screen.

  • 002.

    Twenty years of successive layers

Every change had added a block. None had ever been taken away.

  • 003.

A tool used all day long

A change of habit badly introduced costs more in training than it gives back in comfort.

04.The outcome

A dense tool, readable again

Making the system easy to take over

Documented components and a weekly review with the five teams, until they no longer needed us.

05.Our impact

  • -44%

less time spent on a routine customer file.

  • 5

teams that took over the design system in one quarter.

  • AA

WCAG level reached across every screen taken over.

« A design system taken over by five teams in one quarter, with no added debt and no broken page. »
